Thrills, spills and the excitement of a fully orchestrated rodeo will be a large part of the entertainment planned at the 114th annual Grant County Fair slated for July 24 – 27 at the fairgrounds in Herman.
Rodeo – Friday and Saturday evenings
Two exciting rodeo performances are scheduled, Friday at 7 p.m., and Saturday, at 6 p.m. Triple B Productions are in charge of providing the stock, setting up the rodeo arena, and much more. The rodeo events will include steer wrestling, women’s barrel racing, breakaway roping, calf roping, team roping, and the eight second bull riding event. Since bull riding is the most thrilling to watch, it is slated to be the last event. Riders attempt to stay on the animal for eight seconds using only one hand; the free hand must not touch the rider or the bull. Riders are scored on a 100-point scale, with a perfect score a rarity. Bull riding requires balance, flexibility, coordination, and gut courage.
Music – Friday & Saturday evenings
Following the rodeo Friday night, The Roosters, a four-man country band will entertain on the grounds. They have become well-known in the Midwest, have entertained in Fergus Falls, several locations in the Fargo area, as well as statewide. To see a photo and check their schedule, check out their website at www.theroosters.com.
Saturday evening, following the rodeo, the band, October Road, will entertain. According to their website, www.october-road.com, “they’ve earned a reputation as one of the hardest working and hardest partying groups in the region, and that’s putting it lightly!” Their stats speak for themselves… two straight record breaking years at WeFest, two 6-night stands at the North Dakota State Fair, and the featured opening act for Jon Randall, the Lo-Cash Cowboys, Alvarado Roadshow, Billy Carrington, Chris Cagle, Trick Pony, Little Texas, Rockio Lynne, Diamond Rio, and SheDaisy. The six-member band offers another approach to country music. Lead vocalist and song writer is Shawn Smalley. In 2008 several showcases have been booked in Nashville along with expanded bookings in the Midwest. They plan to release their third album some time this year.
Ag Bash 2008 - Friday
The fifth annual AgBash will be held Friday evening at 5 p.m. in the pavilion. The AgBash includes a banquet dinner, entertainment, door prizes, special raffles and auctions, a general raffle, and a special donor auction. This is a fund raiser by the Grant County Ag Association and numerous organizations and charities in the county do benefit from the proceeds. Tickets go fast. Contact a fair board member soon, if you are interested in attending.
Local Talent to Provide Music
A native of Herman, Sonny Bartell, will be on hand to sing your favorite songs when he entertains during the fair on the stage area near the 4-H building. Sonny will perform at 6 p.m. on Friday.
DuWaine Bristlin of Norcross, aka, DC & Hawk, will be providing music at the Swinging Senior Bash Sunday at 11 a.m. Also featured will be Linda who frequently joins DuWaine on the vocals.
An added attraction will be Betty Rydell and her talented 14-year old granddaughter, Randi Rae. They sing country, gospel, patriotic, and yodel, while providing backup with various instruments including the fiddle. They will entertain along with DC & Hawk on the free stage Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Antique Tractor Show - Saturday
The antique tractor show has been a part of the fair agenda for a number of years. Close to a 100 tractors show up for the pull. Tractors must be from the vintage year 1959 or older. Qualifying classes range from 2,700 lbs. to 10,500 lbs. The pull is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. Contact Doyle Sperr if you are interested in participating.
Spectacular Fireworks - Saturday
The last event on Saturday will be another dynamic fireworks show. This has become a tradition, lighting up the night sky with an approximate start at 10:15 p.m.
Midway Carnival – 1 p.m. Thursday through Saturday midnight. The featured midway carnival will be Minnesota Magic. They will be in attendance from Thursday through Saturday only.
Swinging Senior Bash - Sunday
The Senior Bash is designed to honor Grant County’s seniors. This special event begins at 11 a.m. Sunday morning with a buffet, senior awards, and entertainment by DC & Hawk of Norcross and Betty Rydell. Tickets are on sale by Grant County senior groups, who are instrumental in organizing the event.
Enduro Races – Sunday
The fast paced enduro races will be host to two types of vehicles again this year. Come early and cheer on your favorite driver. Both races are slated for Sunday afternoon, with the regular race beginning at 1 p.m. The second race featuring four-cylinder front-wheel drive cars will begin shortly after the first race finishes. Last fall the track was reshaped and shortened slightly due to a road being constructed alongside the track which leads to the new fertilizer building being constructed by New Horizons Ag Services.
Bingo!
If you get a little tired while walking around the grounds looking at all the exhibits, a great place to rest is at the bingo stand. It’s fun to anticipate the probability of winning one of the great prizes offered. The Fair Board would like to be able to enclose the stand each night and protect it against the elements of wind and rain. If you would like to donate materials or money toward this project, it would be very much appreciated. A list of items required is at Herman True Value and Home Center. If you donate materials, your name or your business’ name will be painted on the bingo hut in recognition of your donation.
